The Gladiators held a 147-43 record under Monjes, including a Class 2A state championship in 2021. Monjes guided the Gladiators to five State Final Fours, and two finalist finishes.  Glenelg was the Howard County Conference Champions in 2014 and 2023.

Two players earned All-American honors under Monjes’ leadership at Glenelg. Girard earned Howard County Player of the Year recognitions in 2014.

“I am pleased to welcome Jay to the Falcon family and am excited for the passion he will bring to the program,” said Athletic Director Steve Howes, 91’. “Coach puts a premium on communication and is very knowledgeable.  Most of all, Jay has shown the ability to create a championship culture where the emphasis is on a positive student athlete experience.”

Monjes serves as the AVCA Region 2 Chair for High School Polls/Award, and is currently an Under Armour Next Volleyball Camp Coach.

Monjes, a Toronto Native, graduated from the University of Toronto in June 2000. At the University of Toronto at Erindale College, Monjes served as the head coach for the men’s/women’s teams for three years, competing against NCAA/NAIA teams.

He also earned a Bachelor’s degree in Health/Physical Sciences from Slippery Rock University in 2003. Monjes served as a volunteer practice player with The Rock for three years, and was also a player and assistant coach of the men’s team. The squad finished in the top-25 at the National Club championship in 2003 held by National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association.

Monjes was the head volleyball coach and physical education teacher at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda for three years before acting as head coach at Trinity Washington University in the 2008 season.

He was also an assistant coach at Notre Dame of Maryland University for the 2012 season.

Monjes worked with Volleyball Canada from 2012-2013 as VIS statistician with the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball Men's World League.

Monjes currently coaches Maryland Junior 14 Elite Black, a junior volleyball club, and earned a bid to the 2024 USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship and 2024 AAU National Championships. He also finished ninth at the 2023 AAU Volleyball National Championships while coaching the 13s division. Monjes also coached the Maryland Juniors 17 Elite Black Team to the USA Volleyball Girls Junior Nationals Championship in 2015.

He earned the AVCA Club Circle award in 2023, given to coaches who have won 70 percent or more of their matches in a season and received a successful place at a Nationals Tournament.

Monjes also serves as the college recruiting coordinator for Maryland Juniors Volleyball Club.

“Good Counsel is a very strong academic school and a lot of our athletic programs are renowned across the country. I hope that we can get volleyball to that realm,” Monjes said.
