Description

This camp is designed for players between the ages of 8-10 and 10-14 years old. 

Instructional Camp | Ages 8-10 years old
Our emphasis will be on the fundamentals necessary to become a successful baseball player at the youth level. We will focus on throwing and catching techniques and drills, specialty positions (pitching, catching, outfield, and infield), base running, and hitting for power and average.

Advanced Camp | Ages 10-14 years old
This camp is designed for players who hope to play higher level baseball. Our emphasis will be on strengthening fundamentals and enhancing knowledge of the game. We will focus on throwing and catching techniques and drills, specialty positions (pitching, catching, outfield, and infield), base running, hitting for power and average, and vision training. Our goal is to teach proper skill mechanics and increase baseball IQ so that campers will have the tools they need to take their game to the next level.

Daily Schedule

9:00 a.m. - Arrival
9:10-9:30 a.m. - Stretch/Warm-up
9:30-10:15 a.m. - Defensive Rotations
10:15-11:00 a.m. - Offensive Rotations
11:00-12:30 p.m. - Lunch/Chalk Talk
12:30-3:00 p.m. - Simulated Coach Pitch Games

What to bring

  • Glove, bat, cleats, helmets
  • Catchers should also bring catcher's gear
  • A lunch plan is available for purchase, or lunch can be brought to camp in a cooler
  • Full water bottle with camper's name on it


Coach Ballance
Camp Director: Steve Ballance,
Head Varsity Baseball Coach

The Baseball Camp Director, Steve Ballance, is the head varsity baseball coach at Good Counsel and is heading into his second season this spring with the Falcons.

Coach Ballance is the co-owner and co-founder of Dig In Baseball in Gaithersburg, a training, coaching, and skills-development program. Ballance led an 18U Dig In team to the 2021 World Wood Bat Association Upperclass Fall Nationals championship in Fort Pierce, Florida. The squad included five 2022 Good Counsel graduates.

Coach Ballance has coached baseball at the high school and college levels for the past 19 years. In 2009, Ballance guided Anne Arundel Community College to the Maryland state junior college championship and was named Coach of the Year. The Riverhawks won a then-school-record 39 games.

Many of Ballance’s former players have played in college. These schools include, among others, Maryland, North Carolina State, Virginia, Duke, Xavier, Towson, Wake Forest, South Carolina, UPenn, and the Naval Academy.

More than 100 of Coach Ballance’s players have competed in the Minor Leagues. Three have made it to the Majors: Bruce Zimmermann (Baltimore Orioles), Ryan Meisinger (Baltimore, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs), and Josh Hader (Milwaukee Brewers).

Coach Ballance and his wife, Stephanie, live in the Baltimore area. They have two daughters, Brooke and Skylar.
