Michael Mastrantuono has been named head boys soccer coach at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. Mastrantuono brings over a decade of experience coaching soccer to the Falcons.
“I'm over the moon right now, super excited,” Mastrantuono said. “There’s a strong athletics environment at Good Counsel.”
Masrtantuono last served as the U19 National League Head Coach at the Alexandria Soccer Association, spending eight years with the organization. He was also an assistant coach for MLSNext and guided various boys' and girls' youth teams.
Mastrantuono previously coached at WCAC rivals DeMatha Catholic High School and The Academy of the Holy Cross. With the Stags, Mastrantuono was an assistant coach for the freshman, junior varsity and varsity levels from 2007 to 2013. He also co-founded the DeMatha Soccer Academy — a revolutionary model of youth soccer student-athlete development that created a year-long soccer club affiliated with the school.
Mastrantuono joined Holy Cross in 2015 and served as the varsity head coach for two seasons. He taught Social Studies and philosophy while at Holy Cross and DeMatha. Mastrantuono will serve as a middle school social studies teacher at Saint Peter’s Catholic School beginning next year.
Mastrantuono also coached at The Soccer Association of Columbia for two years, beginning in 2011 as 98/99 Boys Premier Blue Head Coach. He improved the national ranking in two years, from 444th to 13th while coaching the team to the 2013 U15 Boys Maryland State Cup title. Mastrantuono was awarded the 2013 Boys Travel Coach of the Year by SAC for his efforts.
“Mike’s passion for GC and dedication to Catholic schools mission is impressive,” said Athletic Director Steve Howes, ‘91. “His desire to create enduring personal relationships throughout the program stood out during the search process.”
He graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and played club soccer as a Terp. Mastrantuono earned a Master’s in the Art of Teaching from Trinity Washington University and a coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation.
Good Counsel last won the WCAC in 2021 and has reached the title game twice in the last five seasons. Mastanuono looks to continue the Falcons' recent success in his new role.
“I want to build on the solid foundation that's already been created there,” Mastrantuono said. “I want to not just win the WCAC, but win for years to come and become the dominant powerhouse of the conference.”
