Established by Mrs. Judy Hewitt in memory of her beloved husband, Jim, this scholarship provides financial assistance to a Good Counsel female student who is a team player with evidence of a humble spirit. The recipient should also be accomplished in soccer, basketball, or choral arts.

Mr. Hewitt, was a life long resident of Montgomery County. He attended St. Bernadette’s elementary school and St. John’s College High School before studying at the University of Maryland. Jim had a successful business career. In the 1960's, he was President of Hewitt Construction Company and was responsible for land development and residential construction in Montgomery and Frederick counties. In 1969, he began his banking career as Branch Manager at Laurel Building Association. He worked his way up to Vice President of Lending and was President of Laurel Federal Savings Bank for ten years from 1985 to 1995. He had a reputation as an honest businessman whose word was his bond.

Jim had a lifelong passion for golf and was an excellent player. He learned the game as a young boy, played on his high school golf team, and spent many afternoons on the links with his golfing buddies. His love for golf was surpassed only by his love for his family; his wife Judy, and three daughters. Corey, his youngest daughter, attended Good Counsel from 1991-1995. She thrived academically, socially and in athletics. She embraced the school motto “In today’s world, the loving, good person - even alone - can make a difference”.

Mr. Hewitt and his wife were both drawn to the Good Counsel community and all that it offered. Relationships, treating all people with respect, and fostering community and traditions were important for Mr. Hewitt. He was instrumental in helping to organize the inaugural Father Daughter Dance. For the past 25 years the Hewitt’s have continued their interest in GC and have supported a variety of events. While supporting students at Good Counsel, Mr. Hewitt was always fond of students whose passion for sports or music shone brightly through their God given talents. He respected students that showed grit and determination but above all maintained a humble heart.
